I can't believe that it is our third day. This morning we planned to get up and drive to a few wineries. But we just couldn't get up. Sunrise here is 7:48 AM plus our curtains darken the room like night so when the alarm goes off at 6 AM we slam it to snooze and finally get moving around 8 AM. We still don't make it to Breakfast until 9 AM. We get to the Buffet and find the same offerings. Eggs, Sausage, Bacon Beans. The Buffet also includes a large assortment of breads, fruits, cereal, and yougurt. It is a good meal that we get for half off each morning. Only 5.50 Euros. I haven't found any decaf here yet but we will see.
We lazily eat breakfast and then realize it is after 10 AM. Time is wasting. We get moving and our goals are, Find a pharmacy, find a bank and find the winery. We find the bank first and I try to enter but have to be buzzed in. Being polite I let a young woman in before me as I hold the door. Bad move, she must be paying three different accounts, verifying credit in another country. Fifteen minutes go by and its my turn. I first ask if it really is a bank, the clerk laughs and says yes. Then she tells me that they don't take American Express only Visa or Master Card. So I hold off and exchange $400 US. Read the Euro link on the home page here about that. I leave with my 256 Euros and seem to think that I should have at least got a hicky with that one. And we are off to find a Farmicia. See I am learning the language.
We head out in the direction of the winery and spy a green cross and the word FARMACIA in green. I quickly hang a right and go through a seedy district. This area is right out of the movies, clothes hanging out windows, small streets big enough for one car but off ahead I find it and a free parking spot ( nope the meter was hidden). I leave Doreen in the car while I head off to ask about Ibuprofin, a Diabetes test kit and a mask for my CPAP machine. Yes I forgot my kit and the mask to my machine. Inside the little store there are four or five men in white jackets , little doctors or interns, cute. I ask for Ibuprofin and they have it but in the back, asperin and Tylenol are out front. Then I ask about the test kit. He cocks his head and I gesture pricking my finger. He says "Ah 2.5 Euros" I say great I'll take one. He comes from behind the counter and gestures for me to follow him to this room. Now I see they want to test my blood sugar not give me the kit. I try again and they say " Oh Un momento" then disapapears to the back. He comes out with the kit and I ask how much, ready to hear 35 Euros and he says "No I offer to you". He is giving me the Kit. A kit that I have to get a prescription for in the US, call a toll free number, get some yokel in south gipip to take my order then send me a bill for $30 and wait a week to get. This guy gives me the Kit, shows me how to use it and wishes me good will for the day and my stay in Portugal. No other questions, payments. Oh yeah the 20 tablets of 200mg Ibuprofin only cost me .88 Euros. I come out laughing and explain to Doreen and we now head off to find our winery
As we start out I look at the time and it is almost Noon. Then I remember the brochure that they close for lunch. Hey we will find something to do when we get there. So off on the Portugese highwat system. The rental car has this desire to bing at odd moments. There are tones going off but I can't figure out why. Is it in the wrong gear? Going to fast? then all of a sudden a new bing and I start looking all over the dash and there in the middle is an Oil can with the words MIN under it. I am low on oil. It has been warning me. So now we have to find a gas station and buy oil. It cost me 12 Euros for 1 quart of Diesel grade oil. 12 euros thatis almost six times or more what it costs in the states. All filled up we head out with a big red OK in the middle of the Dash, my engine is thankin me for the drink.
As we proceed along N10 toward the Village of Azeitao. We come accross a large vinyard, large
about a half a mile of vines then big stainless steel tanks. We see a gate and turn in
behind a truck. After the truck pulls in we ask the guard about a tour and tasting and are told
it is lunch time. Come back at 2 PM but call first to set up a tour. We leave and continue down the
road since that wasn;t the winnery we were looking for. We head to the end of the vinyard
turn toward a sign for the Turismo Office. But what do we find then Jose Maria Da Fonseca winery.
Well its lunch time so they are closed until 2 PM as well. So we go to a little Cafe
on the other side of the stree. The O Alface Restaurante
which translates to the Lettuce Resturaunt. I have Linguinha (Fried Sole) while Doreen has
a tomato and lettuce salad with a cup of green vegetable soup. The meal came to 13 Euro. We finish
and walk the street on our short walk back to the winery.
We take the tour for 2.5 Euros each which includes the tasting of two wines. The winery has been in existance since 1880. The wine celler holds barrels that contain over 18,000 liters of wine each. As we walk through the dark winery I walk into one of the barrels and slice open my arm. Our tour guide had to perform first aid before we tast the wines. Here are the pictures of the winery.
We leave the Village around 4 PM and head back to CasCais hoping to find a nice place for dinner tonight. As we get to Cascais we drive along the coast to Mar De inferno which is really just a short walk from our hotel. There is a resturant there but the prices for dinner are about 65 Euros each. Too steep for us so we walk along the rock wall. Here are some shots of this area. The rocks look like lava rocks.
