* IN MEMORIAM: RICHIE STOLARZ
Anyone who enjoys good beer lost a good friend last month. Richie Stolarz,
founder and guiding light of Beers International, died of a heart attack
while returning from Denver's Great American Beer Festival. In the land
where Bud is King of Beers, Richie was the court jester, tweaking the king's
nose by exposing people to Belgian beers, new craft brewed beers and the
possibilities of pairing all sorts of beverages with food. His events were
legendary--he first introduced many folks to beer writer Michael Jackson more
than 13 years ago and had him back for an annual tasting ever since. He put
together phenomenal beer dinners that left you too stuffed and too content to
get out of your seat. Most importantly, all proceeds of the events he
organized benefited various charities.
Richie was a good friend to Flying Fish and to many small breweries. So next
time you're enjoying a particularly tasty beer, raise your glass in a toast
to Mr. Stolarz.

* HOW PILGRIMS CELEBRATED THANKSGIVING--WITH BEER!
The enduring image of Pilgrims braving freezing surf to land at Plymouth Rock
doesn't explain why they really came ashore. The passengers, who were hoping
to land in a more mild Southern climate, were forced ashore in part, due to a
shortage of beer. Most certainly the first Thanksgiving meal was accompanied
not by wine, but with beer. To call attention to this overlooked bit of
history, we've put together a pairing of beers with traditional Thanksgiving
fare. To demonstrate the many ways quality beers can complement Thanksgiving
foods, Flying Fish Brewing offers some guidelines for pairing beer with
foods, as well as recommendations for each course of the Thanksgiving meal.
