Welcome to FlyingFishMail #44 April 2000
Lots of big announcements next month, but in the meantime April's got a lot
going for it too. . .

* BLACKFISH STRIKES GOLD AT U.S. REAL ALE FESTIVAL!
In late March, about 130 cask-conditioned beers from all over the
U.S. were served at the Real Ale Festival in Chicago. Part of the event
featured an expert judging of beers in 6 categories, of which our BlackFish
won in the Brown Ale/Mild category. Among East Coast breweries, only Gritty
McDuff's in Portland, Maine picked up a Gold (for their Bitter). The last
time this event was held, Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel picked up medals in both
the cask and bottled versions.
The idea for the BlackFish came from an unknown, but highly appreciated
bartender in Virginia who combined Flying Fish Extra Pale Ale with Flying
Fish Porter and christened it BlackFish. After several inquiries about the
beer, we saw it as a great idea. We didn't just mix two batches however,
our brewers tweaked the recipies a bit and brewed up this special batch
that has the robustness of the porter with the drinkability of the Extra
Pale. This rare and elusive beer was available as our winter draft seasonal
and will continue to appear throughout the Spring and Summer in special
cask-conditioned versions. Look for it! For you Philly folk, PJ
McMenniman's has a cask that should be tapped any day now.
* SPIRIT IN THE SKY
If you fly Spirit Airlines in the next month or so check out the in-flight
Skylights magazine. There's a feature article on breweries near the
airline's hubs, including good old Flying Fish, only minutes away from the
Atlantic City airport. Other breweries featured are Tun Tavern in NJ,
Brooklyn, and Crooked River in Cleveland.
* THE ULTIMATE IN TIE-DYE T'S AND MORE
We've had a bunch of requests to offer tie-dyed t-shirts, but we were never
happy with the boring cookie cutter tie-dyes that seemed to be available.
Well now we found a local artisan who hand-produces classic dyes of which
no two are alike. We're also featuring new colors for the Fishing Team
t-shirts, as well as 25% off our long-sleeved t-shirts. See it all for
yourself at http://flyingfish.com/WannaWear.html
* DON'T GET ENOUGH BEER-RELATED E-MAIL?
Susan Reigler, the restaurant critic for The Louisville Courier-Journal,
also publishes a daily beer-related e-mail tip sheet through
http://www.tipworld.com
It's short, informative and well worth checking out. Be forewarned though,
it comes out about 5 times a week, so if you're feeling overwhelmed with
e-mail, this may not be for you.
* BEER FEST SEASON IS UNDERWAY
Beer festivals are starting to pop up all over the place. Some to plan for
are Manyunk, PA (4/15); Poor Henry's, Phila., PA (5/6);
Pennsylvania Microbrewers Fest, Pittsburgh, PA (6/3); 4th Annual Garden
State Craftbrewers Fest, Waterloo Village, NJ (6/25). For the latest,
