* 18 MONTHS OLD AND GROWING!
The good news is we've made it through our first 18 months in business.
The great news is that thanks to your help we continue to brew more beer
each month. In fact, we've been at full capacity since December. It's a
good problem to have, but it's still a problem, since we'd like to get a
little wider distribution.
That situation will be changing in the next few months with our first
expansion. We're just finishing an upgrade of our bottling line (a 4-day
job that's taken 14 thanks to Murphy's law and Germany using the metric
system and the U.S. not). This upgrade will give us a 25% increase in
bottling speed. Our new 60 barrel fermenters arrive on April 14, which
will give us about 40% increase in fermenting capacity-just in time for the
summer rush! The way it looks, we'll probably be adding another fermentor
or two later in the summer.
To celebrate our growth and your support, keep your eyes peeled to your
e-mail in-box for an invite to our 3rd E-mail-only private party sometime
in May. You'll be able to sip the 1998 version of the Belgian Farmhouse
Ale and get a first-hand look at the new, improved Flying Fish brewery.
* FIND US IN MAMARONECK, NY
You folks in the Empire State can now enjoy draft ESB Ale at the Charlie
Brown's in Mamaroneck. Why Mamaroneck? Why not!! Besides, the parking in
Manhattan is not nearly as good. Bottles aren't available yet as a result
of the N.J. Seinfeld amendment enacted after Kramer and Newman attempted to
transport deposit bottles over state lines to cash in on the refund. For
some reason, New Jersey won't let us put deposit information on our labels,
but New York (and a lot of other states) requires it, so we'd have to
produce two different sets of labels. That's just a little too expensive
and logistically complicated right now (hey, we're still trying to figure
out the metric system!).
* ALL ABOUT BEER MAGAZINE, MICHAEL JACKSON RAVE ABOUT THE FISH
The world's foremost beer writer, Michael Jackson, recently featured Flying
Fish Porter as one of only eight beers at his annual tutored tastings at
the University of Pennsylvania Museum. He complimented the beer's
complexity and drinkability and remarked that we were one of his favorite
new breweries. The un-gloved one also apologized for inadvertently omitting
us from his most recent edition of World Guide to Beer and promised to
rectify that for the next edition.
The May 1998 issue of "All About Beer" magazine calls Flying Fish ESB Ale
"hugely quaffable" in its review of World Beer Championship winning beers
(Flying Fish took a silver medal). Hugely quaffable. . .kind of makes you
want to head to the fridge right now.
