* .08 LEGISLATION--POLITICS + BAD SCIENCE = BAD LAWS
With the president, Senate and every other opportunist jumping on the
bandwagon, a national standard of .08 blood alcohol content (BAC) for
drivers is a given. So what's that mean? We're obviously all for
responsible drinking. In fact, the whole point of craft beers is that you
drink for quality, not quantity. So, will .08 save lives? Not if you
listen to the people who don't have a vested interest in making cheap
political bonus points. Just a few facts:
--.08 legislation will make a criminal out of a 120-pound woman who drives
after drinking just two 6-ounce glasses of wine over a two-hour period.
--According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the
percentage of fatalities involving .08% drivers is virtually the same as
the percentage involving drivers with .03%, .02%, even .01%!
--According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the risk of
getting into a car accident while talking on a cellular phone is the same
as driving with a .10% BAC, the current "drunk-driving" threshold in most
states.
--Of the 10 states with the lowest percentage of highway fatalities that
are alcohol related, 8 of them have .10% laws.
The bottom line is that .08 will become reality, criminalizing responsible
citizens while doing nothing about the serious drinker. The average blood
alcohol content among fatally injured drinking drivers is .18%! The new
law won't stop these folks and won't reduce fatalities. So in a few years,
the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) folks will be back looking for
even lower limits.
What can you do? Drink responsibly, voice your opinion to your political
representatives and vote out the ones who don't listen.
* NEW GRAND CRU A GRAND BEER!
On a lighter note, let's introduce you to our newest creation: Flying Fish
Belgian Grand Cru. Available on draft only, this strong golden ale
showcases a variety of the ingredients and brewing methods that help
differentiate Flying Fish beers. The Grand Cru is brewed with all Belgian
pilsner malt, augmented by a small amount of Belgian candi sugar, is hopped
with Styrian Goldings, employs a sour mash, and is fermented with two yeast
strains.
Very lightly filtered, the Grand Cru exhibits complex mouthfeel, strong
malt flavors, a spicy hop presence and a soothing alcohol warmth, followed
by a clean, dry finish. Try it soon because it will only be available for a
month or two. For you folks in South Jersey, your local liquor store is
able to order the Grand Cru in one of our new sixth-barrel kegs (5.2
gallons). Be aware, however, that there are only a few of these!
ABV: 6.9%; O.G.: 1.066; I.B.U.: 27

* CASK-CONDITIONED BEER UPDATE
Finally--cask-conditioned beers comes to South Jersey! We just christened
the new beer engine at PJ Whelihan's in Wesmont, NJ, going through two
casks in about as many hours. Look for a steady flow of cask beer from now
on. Also, check out the Old Bay's month-long Caskapalooza starting March
22 (see calendar above). You can also find Flying Fish cask beers at:
Andy's Corner in Bogota, NJ; Dawson Street Pub, PJ McMennimins, COPA Too!,
Bridgid's and London in Philadelphia; Gullifty's in Ardmore, PA; and the
Green Leafe Cafe in Williamsburg, VA. If you haven't tried a cask version
of Flying Fish, you're missing out. Cask beers are "living" in that they
have some yeast still in them as well as some extra hops for aroma and
flavor. Once they're tapped, they continue to evolve, so that the last
pint in the keg is remarkably different from the first.
