* GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL REPORT
Well, we finally recovered from our first visit as a brewery to the Great
American Beer Festival. Let's see, the weather was 85°, sunny with
incredible blue skies and no humidity. And, oh yeah, there were 1,800 beers
available for tasting. The event itself was almost (almost) too much of a
good thing, what with all those beers available, but only in 1 ounce
servings. We did get to meet a lot of folks who we know via the 'net, so
that was a lot of fun. We didn't get a medal this time, but neither did a
lot of beers we thought were the best in their style. We'll have some
photos posted at http://flyingfish.com/WhatsNew.html in the next day or so.
As you may know, the Denver-area beer scene is one of the country's most
vibrant. Our faves included the pioneering Wynkoop in Denver, the more
recently opened Mountain Sun in Boulder (tasty food and beer at tasty
prices) and New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins. If you get a chance to
visit, the New Belgium brewery is a real beauty, the people super friendly
and the beers outstanding. Their Belgian Dubbel took the gold medal in the
Belgian category. Check 'em out at http://newbelgium.com
* WHERE TO GET THE PORTER AND BELGIAN DUBBEL
Both new beers are out making their mark on the world, but availability
varies. We've been a little overwhelmed with the great response from
y'all, but we're starting to catch up. The beer is available in kegs all
over, but as for bottles, here's the scoop:
* New Jersey: The Porter is available all over in 6-packs. The Dubbel
will become available starting November 1 as part of a mixed case featuring
all 4 styles. There aren't any 6-packs at this time.
* Pennsylvania: Both the porter and Dubbel are available in cases. Both
will also be available on a limited basis as part of the mixed case.
* Virginia: OK, here's where it gets complicated. The Porter is
available in 6-packs throughout the state. The Dubbel is available by the
case, except at Total Beverage stores. They will be getting an extremely
limited supply of Dubbel in home-made 6-packs next week.
Sure it's complicated, but finding good beer is worth it ;-)
* HELP WANTED IN THE LAB
One of the things that keeps Flying Fish beers tasting great is that we
spend a lot of time on quality control and lab tests. We're at the point
where we are running out of time to do it all ourselves, so we're looking
for some part time lab help. We need somebody who has microscope skills,
can do plating and the usual basic lab stuff. We're flexible in hours, it
can be anytime anyone is at the brewery, which is basically 12 hours a day,
7 days a week. Heck, we're even offering to pay something. If you're a
microbiologist or someone of that sort and would like to get involved at
Flying Fish, e-mail us at news@flyingfish.com or give a call at
609-489-0061.
* UPCOMING FLYING FISH EVENTS
Thanks to your support, Flying Fish is getting out into more and more places
and doing more and more events (hey, it's the only way we get out of the
brewery). Things are a little slow on the event front right now since
we're trying to get out as much beer as we can. Anyway, here are some
upcoming dates and places where you can find us:
--November 1 (Saturday): Octoberfest on the Hudson, Pier 59, New York City
Selections from 30 craftbrewers, music, food and more. Two sessions:
1-5pm and 7-11 pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event.
Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex
Pier 59 (17th to 23rd Streets on the Hudson)
For more information: 212-336-6431
--November 22 & 23 (Saturday/Sunday): 6th Annual Great Brews of America
Festival
A well-run festival smack in the heart of the Poconos and all those
heart-shaped tubs. Conveniently located right off the Pennsylvania Turnpike
and Interstate 80. More than 40 breweries will be showcasing their
products. For more information, give Split Rock a call at 1-800-255-7625
or visit http://www.splitrockresort.com
There's more to come, so keep checking: http://flyingfish.com/live.html
* CASK-CONDITIONED BEER UPDATE
If you haven't tried a cask version of our ESB, Extra Pale Ale or Porter,
you're due for a treat. Cask beers are "living" in that they have some
yeast still in them as well as some extra hops for aroma and flavor. Once
they're tapped, they continue to evolve, so that the last pint in the keg
is remarkably different from the first. We just did some casks dry-hopped
with organic New Jersey hops grown at the Flying Fish Brewing Company
experimental farm (so what if it looks like one of our back yards?). The
Cascade hops are, we think, the first NJ grown hops used in a commercial
beer this century. Some of the casks are gone, but three places that do
have them are Andy's Corner in Bogota, NJ, Dawson Street Pub in
Philadelphia, and Greenleaves Pub in Williamsburg, VA. You can also find
cask porter and ESB at Copa TOO! in Philadelphia, Gullifty's on
Philadelphia's Main Line, and The Old Bay in New Brunswick.
